Stirling, N.J. (December 14, 2016) – New RARe Motheye™ optical fibers from Fiberguide Industries feature enhanced high power performance. The new technology surpasses current anti-reflective coated fiber capabilities, providing benefits for high power delivery, research and development, medical, photonics and industrial applications.

Motheye nanostructures were originally discovered by the observation of nocturnal insects, such as moths, whose compound eyes were found to reflect little or no light regardless of the angle. Fiberguide uses a unique, randomized process to create Motheye nanostructures on the fiber surface. This results in fiber optic assemblies with superior wavelength range (400-2200nm), durability and damage thresholds when compared with commonly used AR coatings. Since the anti-reflective structure closely matches the underlying material, damage thresholds are typically close to those of bare fiber. Motheye fibers are also hydrophobic, allowing simple water cleanup of fiber faces.

RARe Motheye fibers are available with core sizes ranging from 3µm to 3mm in step index multi-mode or custom single-mode configurations. Material options include silica core, silica clad, polymer coated or metal coated construction.
